In a new paper out this week, I collaborated with Rebecca Astbury (University of Perugia) to decipher pre-eruptive processes before the Astroni 6 eruption of Campi Flegrei. This study utilized novel high-resolution trace element maps to track the migration of crystals through the sub-volcanic system. We were able to apply quantitative geobarometers to show that crystals grew within two magma storage regions, which correlate with the current depths of magma storage at Campi Flegrei, identified by seismic tomography. The Astroni 6 eruption was preceded by a single influx of magma from deep in the crust into the shallow storage region.
